MSNBC contributor Maya Wiley departs network to explore New York mayoral run

Maya Wiley is parting ways as a contributor with MSNBC and NBC News to explore a run for New York City mayor, MSNBC confirmed to The Hill on Tuesday.

Wiley, a former top counsel for Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) and chairwoman of New York City’s police oversight agency, is among other media figures believed to be considering jumping into the 2021 race, including CNN President Jeff Zucker and billionaire businessman and radio talk show host John Catsimatidis.

De Blasio is term-limited and cannot run next year.

If Wiley came out victorious, she would serve as the city’s first female mayor. She is currently a professor at The New School.

A July 10 Marist College poll has de Blasio’s approval underwater at 42 percent in the largely Democratic city.
