Russell Crowe’s road-rage thriller “Unhinged” grossed $4 million at U.S. box offices over the weekend, the first major movie release in theaters since the pandemic took hold.

The film has already generated $7.7 million overseas and in Canada after being released earlier this month.

The opening weekend numbers were mostly below previous debuts of movies starring Crowe, an Academy Award winner: “A Good Year” delivered $3.7 million in 2006; “The Next Three Days” took in $6.5 million in 2010; “The Insider” grossed 6.7 million in 1999; and “Gladiator” captured $32.7 million in 2000.

“We made the movie for $33 million,” Mark Gill, the producer of “Unhinged” and head of Solstice Studios, told The Hill last week. “If we do $30 million at the North American box office by the time we finish our run, we’re happy.”

“Unhinged” was released as most U.S. movie theaters are operating at 25 percent to 50 percent capacity, though theaters in some major cities are still closed.

The movie has a 76 percent audience rating on the movie review website Rotten Tomatoes.

A recent survey of American moviegoers by U.S. digital ticketing platform Atom Tickets found that 77 percent of respondents said they are ready to return to theaters once they reopen, with just 1 percent saying they never plan to return to theaters.
