Kimmel-hosted Emmy Awards attract all-time low 6.1M viewers: ‘Well, we set a record’

The 72nd Emmy Awards drew just 6.1 million viewers on ABC Sunday night, easily marking an all-time ratings low for the show, according to Nielsen.

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the awards show, after it went hostless last year.

“Well, I hosted the virtual Emmys last night. They’re saying it was the highest-rated Emmys ever,” Kimmel said on his late-night program Monday night. “Oh, the lowest? Oh, all right. Well, we set a record, let’s just say that.”

Kimmel also noted that the usual Emmys parties that were held before the pandemic were all off this year.

“When it was over, there are usually parties and everyone is carrying their Emmys around, everybody’s happy, everybody’s celebrating. This year, the show ended and it was like ‘Well, I guess I’ll go into my car and drive home.’ It was nothing,” he said.

NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” matchup between New England and Seattle easily won the ratings race on Sunday night, with more than 14 million people tuning in to see the Seahawks’ 35-30 victory over the Patriots.

The 2019 Emmys on Fox had held the record for the lowest-rated in the show’s history, drawing 7 million total viewers.
