Whoopi Goldberg wears ‘my vice president’ shirt day after inauguration

Actress and television host Whoopi Goldberg wore a “my vice-president is a black woman” shirt on “The View” a day after Vice President Harris was sworn in to office.

President Biden and Harris were sworn in to office Wednesday at the Capitol during an outdoor inauguration ceremony. Harris is the first Black American, first South Asian American and first woman to hold the No. 2 office.

“The View” co-host said Thursday that Harris stands on the shoulders of women in politics who came before her.

“To all the women who tried to mount this mountain like Shirley Chisholm, like Hillary Clinton, thank you for everything you did because on your shoulders stands our first Black, female, Asian vice president,” Goldberg said on the show.

Former Rep. Shirley Chisholm (D-N.Y.) was the first Black woman to be elected to Congress and Hillary Clinton was the first woman to be nominated as a presidential candidate in a major party in the United States.

Geraldine Ferraro was the first female vice presidential nominee for the Democratic ticket in 1984. Sarah Palin became the second female vice presidential nominee in U.S. history after the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) selected her as his running mate in 2008.

Harris herself has previously recognized the historic nature of her nomination and electoral success. Shortly after the November 2020 election both Biden and Harris addressed a crowd in Wilmington, Del.

“While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,” the former California lawmaker said, according to The New York Times. “Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.”

A record number of women are also expected to serve in Biden’s Cabinet, should they be confirmed by the Senate.
