Brzezinski: ‘You’re not a patriot’ if you don’t support Trump impeachment
MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski on Wednesday blasted lawmakers who do not support former President Trump’s impeachment for allegedly inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, saying, “You’re not a patriot if you can’t see what happened here.”
During a segment Wednesday morning on Day 2 of the Senate trial against Trump, Brzezinski looked back at scenes from the deadly riot. The House last month impeached Trump for a second time following the Capitol breach, accusing him of inciting insurrection.
“Everybody knows why these people were there desecrating the people’s house, ruining things, hurting people, murdering people, maiming people and using the American flag as a weapon,” Brzezinski said on “Morning Joe.” “They were doing it for Trump.”
Trump’s second impeachment trial began on Tuesday with opening remarks from House impeachment managers and Trump’s defense team. Trump’s team drew criticism from some GOP lawmakers, with senators blasting the meandering defense as “unfocused.”
Bruce Castor, one of Trump’s defense attorneys, argued that Trump should not be impeached as he had already been removed from office by voters.
Many Republicans have argued that it is unconstitutional to impeach a former president, though Democrats and some GOP lawmakers note that Trump was impeached while he was still in office and argue he should be help responsible for the violent riot.
Brzezinski, a vocal Trump critic, appeared to agree with the argument set forth by Democratic lawmakers.
“The frustrating thing here is that this has to be explained explicitly to Republicans, and they turn away. They can’t make this math themselves,” Brzezinski said. “If you can’t see what happened here, look in the mirror, because there’s a big problem with your moral core and — you’re not a patriot if you can’t see what happened here, and stand on the right side of history.”
