WNBA coach fined and suspended for mocking player’s weight

The WNBA said on Monday that it has fined and suspended a head coach over mocking a player’s weight during a game.

The league said in a statement that the Connecticut Suns head coach and general manger Curt Miller has been banned for one game and fined $10,000 for comments he made on Sunday towards Las Vegas Aces star center Liz Cambage, when he told the referee that Cambage weighed 300 pounds.

Cambage addressed the incident in an Instagram story, saying that Miller showed a lack of respect.  

 “You were so lucky that I was doing my job,” Cambage said.

Miller apologized Monday to Cambage and the Aces for his comments. 

“I made an inappropriate and offensive comment in reference to Liz Cambage’s height and weight,” he said, according to The Associated Press.  “I regret what I said in the heat of the moment and want to sincerely apologize to Liz and the entire Aces organization. I understand the gravity of my words and have learned from this.”

Miller, who coached the Sun to the WNBA finals in 2019, will miss Tuesday’s contest against the Seattle Storm.
