José Díaz-Balart gets daytime show on MSNBC

Journalist José Díaz-Balart is getting his own daytime news show on MSNBC.

Díaz-Balart, who hosts “NBC Nightly News” on the weekends and is based in Miami, will premier a new show dubbed “José Díaz-Balart Reports” on Sept. 27, the network announced on Wednesday. 

“I’m privileged to anchor MSNBC’s 10 a.m. hour to report on the issues that matter to all communities across America,” Díaz-Balart said. “It has been my honor to serve as the anchor of ‘Noticias Telemundo’ where we rigorously cover the most important news for the Latino community. I look forward to this unique role where I can reach different audiences in English and Spanish across the NBCUniversal News Group and Telemundo.”

Once his new show premiers, Díaz-Balart will become the only anchor to host national news programs on both cable and broadcast television in English and Spanish. He’ll continue to anchor “Nightly News” on the weekends and take on what the network described as “a broader role” at “Noticias Telemundo,” where he will anchor monthly specials and breaking news events. 

“José is one of the most trusted names in news, and I’ve been a longtime admirer of his work,” MSNBC President Rashida Jones said in a statement. “I had the pleasure of working with José in the past, most recently for the presidential debates. His expertise in politics, passion for his craft, and commitment to getting the story right come through every time he’s on air. I’m excited for him to bring that back to the network on a daily basis.”

Díaz-Balart previously served as an anchor during MSNBC’s daytime programming from 2014 to 2016, and began anchoring “Nightly News” on Saturdays in 2016. 

He joined Noticias Telemundo in 2000, and began anchoring that network’s nightly news program in 2009. He’ll stop hosting “Noticias Telemundo” at the end of the month, “given his expanded responsibilities across the networks,” the network said.
