Washington Post restructures leadership

The Washington Post is restructuring its senior editorial management team under the leadership of Executive Editor Sally Buzbee.

Cameron Barr, currently managing editor for news and features at the Post, will become the outlet’s senior managing editor, overseeing the Post’s daily online and print coverage. Kat Downs Mulder, the outlet’s current managing editor for digital, will move to a joint role as chief product officer and managing editor.

Krissah Thompson, whom the newspaper tapped last year to serve as its first-ever managing editor for diversity and inclusion, will take on an expanded role to include oversight of the features department and the climate and environment team.

The reshuffling of the newspaper’s masthead was announced in a memo from Buzbee to newsroom staff on Tuesday morning.

“These changes will help ensure that we are focused on producing more of the revelatory journalism for which The Post is known, and help ensure that we can present that journalism in the most innovative ways possible,” she said. “I deeply appreciate the input and ideas that so many of you have shared since I began this job and hope these new assignments and roles will continue to provide the support that you, our talented journalists, deserve and need.”

In addition, Tracy Grant, a managing editor in charge of newsroom operations and standards under former Executive Editor Marty Baron, has “requested a return to writing,” Buzbee said.

In an interview with the Post, Buzbee called the realigned newsroom a “distillation” of conversations she has had with staffers and her own observations since joining the paper earlier this year.

When Buzbee took the job, Post publisher Fred Ryan said the newspaper “sought a bold leader who can manage our dynamic newsroom and bureaus across the globe,” as it looked to replace Baron.

“We looked for some who shares our values of diversity and inclusion, and who is committed to prioritizing them in our news coverage as well as our hiring and promotion,” Ryan said.
