Reporter who broke Trump ‘Access Hollywood’ story leaving WaPost for NYT

The journalist who broke the story revealing the “Access Hollywood” tape during former president Trump’s first campaign for the White House is leaving The Washington Post for The New York Times. 

David Fahrenthold, who joined the Post as an intern in 2000 and became a member of the newspaper’s politics team in 2010, will leave the Post to join the Times in the coming weeks, according to a memo sent to Post staffers and an announcement from the Times on Monday.

Fahrenthold won a Pulitzer Prize in 2017 for his reporting on Trump’s businesses. 

“Dave’s reporting revealed that Trump had repeatedly used the foundation’s money to pay off debts for his private businesses, to make a $25,000 political donation and to buy large paintings of himself,” Elisabeth Bumiller, Washington bureau chief at the Times wrote on Monday in an announcement of his hire. “The stories led to a lawsuit by the New York Attorney General, the closure of the foundation and a $2 million penalty for Trump.”

Fahrenthold starts at the Times on Jan. 24 and will report to Dick Stevenson, the Times’s enterprise and investigations editor in Washington, D.C.
