Democrats are primed for a sweep in N.M.
A new poll by the Albuquerque Journal shows that Democrats have a good chance to control every congressional seat representing New Mexico.
{mosads}The poll shows Rep. Tom Udall (D) leading rival Republican Rep. Steve Pearce, 53-39, in their battle for a Senate seat. Republican strategists in Washington wrote off the upper-chamber race months ago, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee saved its advertising dollars for other races.
Democrats also have leads in races for two open Republican House seats.
Democrat Martin Heinrich leads Republican Darren White by four points, 47-43, in New Mexico’s 1st district, which retiring Rep. Heather Wilson (R) now holds.
In the 2nd district, which President Bush carried with 58 percent of the vote in 2004, conservative Democrat Harry Teague leads Republican Ed Tinsley, 45-41. Republican strategists in Washington have criticized Tinsley for not spending more of his personal fortune on the race. Pearce vacated the seat to run for Senate.
Democrat Ben Ray Luján is a lock to win Udall’s seat.
