Ex-congressman Lawrence J. Hogan Sr. dies

Former Rep. Lawrence J. Hogan Sr. (R-Md.), 88, died late Thursday, according to his son, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R).

“At 10:24 tonight, an American hero, and the man that I am most proud of, passed away,” Larry Hogan wrote on Facebook. “He had an amazing life that spanned 88 years. He leaves behind a loving family, countless friends and admirers, and a lasting legacy that won’t be forgotten.”

The Baltimore Sun reported Thursday that Lawrence Hogan died at Anne Arundel Medical Center following complications from a stroke.

He was first elected to the House in 1968, ultimately winning two more terms there before exiting in 1975.

The Maryland lawmaker and future governor’s father was the first Republican on the House Judiciary Committee to openly call for former President Richard Nixon’s impeachment.

“It doesn’t make any difference whether [Nixon] got in at the beginning or the middle or the end,” Lawrence Hogan told the Sun weeks before Nixon’s resignation in 1974. “He was a conspirator.”

He voted for all three articles of impeachment against Nixon when they were adopted by the Judiciary Committee in 1974.

Larry Hogan recalled his father’s principles during the Watergate scandal upon his inauguration as governor in January 2015.

“I probably learned more about integrity in one day when my dad read that vote than most people learn in their lifetime,” he said.
