‘Alternative facts’ tops list of 2017 notable quotes
The phrase “alternative facts” has topped a 2017 list of notable quotes.
The term came in on the top of a Yale Law School librarian’s list of the most notable quotes of 2017, according to The Associated Press.
“I actually had to limit the amount of Trump-related quotations on the list so as not to have the list overwhelmed by him,” said Fred Shapiro, an associate director at the library who assembled the list, which is an update to “The Yale Book of Quotations.”{mosads}
White House adviser Kellyanne Conway used the term alternative facts during a January interview, shortly after Trump was inaugurated.
She said at the time that then-White House press secretary Sean Spicer provided “alternative facts” to reporters during his first press briefing.
“You’re saying it’s a falsehood. And they’re giving — Sean Spicer, our press secretary, gave alternative facts to that,” Conway said during a January interview on NBC.
Her comments came after Spicer, during his first press briefing with reporters, railed against the media for its coverage of crowd size at Trump’s inauguration ceremony.
“This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period, both in person and around the globe,” Spicer said.
Photos and video from the ceremony showed fewer people in attendance for Trump’s ceremony compared to former President Obama’s 2009 inauguration.
People on social media quickly mocked the term “alternative facts.”
The list of notable quotes includes phrases that are “revealing of the spirit of the time,” according to the AP.
Other quotes that made the list include French President Emmanuel Macron saying “Make our planet great again” and President Trump’s comments in May after he fired former FBI director James Comey.
“I just fired the head of the FBI. He was crazy, a real nut job. I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off,” Trump said then.
