Former CIA Director Michael Hayden ripped the State Department on Tuesday after the agency posted a tweet declaring that “U.S. leadership is back on the world stage” thanks to President Trump.

“Aren’t you a little embarrassed? Really? Aren’t you? Confidence in America is significantly down everywhere in the world except except Russia and Israel. Significantly down. Really…no foolin’,” Hayden tweeted, responding to the State Department.

According to the 2017 Pew Research Global Attitudes Survey, confidence in the U.S. president has decreased globally across the board, with the exceptions of Russia and Israel — two countries Trump has sought to build closer ties with.

Trump has also, at times, taken a more antagonistic approach to traditional U.S. allies. He has often insisted, for example, that Washington bears an unfair burden of the cost of NATO, and has pressed other members to spend more on defense.

Just last week, the Trump administration announced that it would impose stiff tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Mexico, Canada and the European Union, after previously exempting them. That prompted threats of retaliatory tariffs as well as challenges from Canada and the EU at the World Trade Organization.
