Dems appear more fired up than Republicans over Kavanaugh nomination: poll

Democrats appear more energized than Republicans from Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s contentious confirmation process, according to a new poll.

A POLITICO/Morning Consult poll published early Wednesday found that 77 percent of Democrats said they are “very motivated” to vote in November’s midterm elections, compared to the 68 percent of Republicans who had the same response.

{mosads}“Brett Kavanaugh’s Senate confirmation battle appears to be a significant motivator, as voter enthusiasm for the upcoming midterms has hit its highest point since Morning Consult and POLITICO began tracking the issue,” Tyler Sinclair, Morning Consult’s vice president, told Politico.

Additionally, 78 percent of Democrats think it was the wrong decision for the Senate to confirm Kavanaugh, while 11 percent think it was the right decision. Meanwhile, the poll found that 73 percent of Republicans think it was the right decision and 12 percent think it was the wrong decision, according to the poll.

Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court by a 50-48 vote in the Senate on Saturday. His confirmation process was temporarily upended last month amid sexual misconduct allegations. Three women — Christine Blasey Ford, Deborah Ramirez and Julie Swetnick — came forward publicly and accused him of sexual misconduct.

Kavanaugh forcefully denied the allegations during a hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee last month. 

The new poll found that 44 percent of voters said the confirmation process gave them a less favorable view of Kavanaugh, while 30 percent said they now view Kavanaugh more favorably. 

The poll’s results were based on surveys with 2,189 registered voters on Sunday. The poll has a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
