The body of a 7-year-old girl who died while in Border Control custody has been returned to Guatemala, the Associated Press reported Monday.
Jakelin Caal Maquin’s body arrived Sunday at Guatemala City’s international airport before being taken to her family’s home early Monday.
The girl crossed into the U.S. with her family and other migrants before she died earlier this month from dehydration and shock while in Border Control custody.
{mosads}Caal reportedly was dehydrated and had not eaten in several days before dying. She began having seizures while in custody before being flown to a hospital in El Paso, where she went into cardiac arrest and died.
An expert with the United Nations on Monday called for a thorough investigation into her death, which has drawn increased scrutiny into how Border Patrol treats migrants who have crossed into the U.S. illegally.
Rep. Lou Correa (D-Calif.), likely the next head of the House Homeland Security Oversight subcommittee, said this month that he was “devastated” but “hardly surprised” by Caal’s death.
“This young girl was a casualty of the president’s obsession with building an unnecessary border wall, instead of investing in the resources and training our national security professionals need,” added Correa.
