A former Georgia congressional candidate charged with the murder of her husband has reportedly entered a plea deal and has been sentenced to decades in prison.
Kellie Lynn Collins, 33, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and entered the deal for a reduced charge on Thursday, local outlet The Augusta Chronicle reports. She was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
{mosads}Collins originally turned down the deal on Thursday but changed her mind after speaking with her lawyer, the Chronicle reported. As part of the deal, a grand larceny charge against her was reportedly dropped.
Collins, a Democratic candidate for Georgia’s 10th Congressional District, was charged last year with the murder of 41-year-old Curt Cain, her campaign treasurer whom she married a week before he was found dead at his home in August 2018, the Chronicle reported.
An autopsy reportedly indicated that Cain was fatally shot in the back. Officials later found evidence showing small footprints throughout the room, a missing debit card in Cain’s wallet and efforts by Collins to evade capture, the Aiken Standard reported.
Collins, who was made the beneficiary of Cain’s insurance shortly before he died, was charged with murder and grand larceny in connection with the incident.
The former candidate later withdrew from the race citing personal reasons.
