Inmate at center of ‘Making a Murderer’ asks for pardon or commutation

Brendan Dassey, a murder convict profiled in the 2015 Netflix series “Making a Murderer,” asked Wisconsin’s governor to pardon him or commute his life prison sentence Wednesday, according to The Associated Press.

Dassey was 16 years old when he confessed to joining his uncle Steve Avery in raping and killing photographer Teresa Halbach in 2015 and then burning her body.

{mosads}Dassey’s lawyers argue that he is partially mentally disabled and he was coerced into confessing by police officers, though Wisconsin prosecutors have said the confession was voluntary.

He is unlikely to be pardoned, according to AP. Gov. Tony Evers (D) restarted the state’s pardons board this year, the news agency reported, but he has said applicants need to have fulfilled their sentences and added that he won’t consider a sentence commutation.

Dassey will not be eligible for parole until 2048.
