Mark Cuban on not reopening Mavericks facility: ‘Just not worth it’

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said the team’s practice facility would remain closed for the time being, even though the NBA is allowing teams to resume workouts in places where coronavirus restrictions have been loosened.

“The problem, obviously, is that because we can’t test people then we can’t assure anybody’s safety, whether they’re basketball players or anybody else,” Cuban told The Athletic. “Even though we can try to take all different kinds of precautions, it’s just not worth it, particularly when our guys are staying in shape and they’re going outside and shooting on outdoor hoops and working out in various ways. So I just don’t think the risk is worth the reward.”

The stay-at-home order for Texas expired on April 30 and certain businesses have started to reopen.

The NBA last week told teams not to test asymptomatic personnel, while adding it was still looking at league-wide testing options.

Three teams — the Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets and Cleveland Cavaliers — plan on reopening Friday, with more teams looking to follow suit later this month.
