Former first lady Michelle Obama paid homage to her 82-year-old mother Friday morning ahead of Mother’s Day weekend, saying, “You are my rock and my best friend.”
She posted a clip on social media featuring a conversation with her mother, Marian Shields Robinson, and brother, Craig Robinson, from an outtake of the recent Netflix documentary “Becoming.”
The clip highlighted old photographs of her and Craig with their mother and late father, Fraser Robinson.
Marian said in the video, “I had fun with my kids” while she was raising them, adding, “I just couldn’t wait to see what they were going to come in and say next, because it was always something.”
In a caption on Instagram, Obama wrote about her mother’s understanding nature and the support she gave to her children.
“When we were growing up, she always gave us the space to ask questions and share our ideas. And she always took us seriously, carefully considering what we had to say and responding with thoughtful questions and plenty of encouragement,” she said.
Obama added, “All along, she was empowering us to be ourselves, kindling the unique flame burning inside each of us. She laid out the blueprint for how I have raised my own girls.”
