New Jersey woman, 108, recovers from coronavirus

A 108-year-old New Jersey woman recovered from COVID-19 after being diagnosed last month, making her one of the nation’s oldest survivors of the novel virus.

The survivor, Sylvia Goldsholl, was born in 1911 and has lived through two pandemics. She was only 6 years old when the Spanish flu pandemic hit the U.S., according to NorthJersey.com

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) hailed Goldscholl in a tweet on Thursday. 

“Sylvia Goldscholl is 108 years old. Last month, she tested positive for #COVID19 and has beaten it. A tremendous life, a tremendous spirit, and a tremendous show of strength. So, to you, Sylvia, we send you all our best for many more years to come,” Murphy tweeted.

Goldsholl lived in New York City for most of her life, staying at the apartment where she grew up, according to the report. She moved to New Jersey at the Allendale Community for Senior Living in 2010.

On how she feels about surviving the novel coronavirus, Goldsholl said, “They knew that I was a wonder,” she said about her family. “I met their expectations. I represented them in a very well way.”

Though Goldsholl never married or had kids, her niece, Nancy Chazen, said her aunt loves her family. Chazen said she plans to visit her after the pandemic.

“She always wanted to have family parties,” Chazen said. “She thought it was important to stay in touch with the family.”

Earlier this week, a 113-year-old woman, reportedly the oldest woman in Spain, survived the coronavirus as well.
