Hillary Clinton: Trump exercising ‘partisan power’ instead of honoring Ginsburg’s wishes

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said that President Trump is using “partisan power” in seeking to quickly fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg instead of honoring her wishes. 

NPR reported shortly after the news of Ginsburg’s death on Friday that her dying wish was that she not be replaced until a new president was in office. 

“Justice Ginsburg has such a reverence for the court, and the law, and our Constitution, that when she dictated that statement to her granddaughter she was not speaking personally and certainly not as a partisan,” Clinton told Bloomberg Wednesday.

“Now we are left with what will be a very unfortunate display of partisan power to push through whoever the President nominates. And what I hope the American people will pay attention to is what’s at stake.”

“She was offering her measured opinion that it would be in the interest of our country and most certainly in the interest of the court so close to an election to allow the election to go forward and then whoever was elected would be able to choose the next justice.”

Trump and GOP leaders are moving quickly on filling Ginsburg’s vacancy on the conservative-majority court, marking a reversal from their stance in 2016, when they refused to move then-President Obama’s final Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland.

“Now we are left with what will be a very unfortunate display of partisan power to push through whoever the president nominates,” said. “And what I hope the American people will pay attention to is what’s at stake.”
