Trump appears at Sarah Huckabee Sanders campaign event

Former President Trump made an appearance at a campaign event for Sarah Huckabee Sanders over the weekend, the former White House press secretary said.

“Great weekend on the campaign trail featuring a surprise appearance at one of my events by President Trump,” Sanders said in a tweet on Sunday evening, along with a photo of her and the former president.

Sanders, a Republican, announced earlier this year she intends to run for governor of Arkansas, a position her father held in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

“As governor, I will defend your right to be free of socialism and tyranny, your Second Amendment right, your freedom of speech and religious liberty,” she said in a video announcing her campaign.

Sanders at the time touted what she described as Trump’s historic achievements during his time in the White House in her campaign announcement.

“I took on the media, the radical left and their cancel culture, and I won,” she said. “As governor, I will be your voice and never let them silence you.”

Soon after, Trump endorsed Sanders’s bid for the executive office in Arkansas.

“Sarah is strong on borders, tough on crime and fully supports the second amendment and our great law enforcement officers,” Trump said in a statement. “She loves our military and veterans — and her home state of Arkansas. She will be a GREAT Governor and she has my complete and total endorsement.”

Since leaving the White House, Trump has sparred with the Republican Party over its use of his name and likeness, urging voters not to donate to mainstream Republican candidates and threatening to support primary challengers more closely aligned with his views.

Polling shows a solid majority of Republicans say they remain loyal to Trump, with many saying they would support him should he run for president again.
