Darnella Frazier, the teenager who filmed the George Floyd footage seen around the world, applauded the guilty verdict in the murder case of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on Tuesday.
“I just cried so hard,” the now-18-year-old wrote in a Facebook post after the trial concluded.
She added, “This last hour my heart was beating so fast, I was so anxious, anxiety bussing through the roof. But to know GUILTY ON ALL 3 CHARGES !!! THANK YOU GOD THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.”
She concluded her message by writing, “George Floyd we did it!! justice has been served.”
Three hours after it went live, Frazier’s post had already drawn more than 1,000 comments, many of which praised her for sharing Floyd’s story.
Frazier, who testified last month during the trial, said that Floyd’s death changed her life.
“When I look at George Floyd, I look at my dad, I look at my brothers, I look at my cousins, my uncles because they’re all Black,” she said while on the stand. “I have a Black father. I have a Black brother. I have Black friends. And I look at that and I look at how that could have been one of them.”
She said she’s carried guilt for not intervening while she was filming the incident.
“It’s been nights I stayed up apologizing to George Floyd for not doing more and not physically interacting and not saving his life, but it’s not what I should have done. It’s what he should have done.”
