Broad majorities of Americans support both President Biden’s proposed $2 trillion infrastructure package and a separate proposal addressing issues such as child care and college tuition, according to a new poll.
Sixty-eight percent of U.S. adults supported the president’s infrastructure package dealing with physical needs including road, bridge and tunnel upkeep, as well as broadband internet expansion and electric vehicle investments, a Monmouth University Poll survey released Monday found.
Less than a third, 29 percent, oppose the plan while the remainder are undecided.
A similar majority, 64 percent, supports what the poll describes as “a large spending plan to expand access to healthcare and childcare, and provide paid leave and college tuition support,” which the president is expected to unveil this week. A slightly higher percentage, 34 percent, oppose that idea as compared to the infrastructure proposal.
The poll also registered widespread support for Biden’s plan to fund the infrastructure package through hikes to the corporate tax rate (64 percent) and wealthy individuals (65 percent), despite opposition from Republicans and some conservative Democrats to that idea.
Monmouth’s poll registered higher levels of support for the infrastructure package than did a poll published this weekend by the Washington Post and ABC News, which found support from 52 percent of U.S. adults for the plan, as well as a poll from Fox News which recorded support for the plan at 49 percent among registered voters.
Monmouth University Poll surveyed 800 U.S. adults between April 8-12 via landline and cellphone sampling. The margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.
