McCaskill: Making Charlottesville ‘about monuments is distracting’

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) said people should not make the violent clashes earlier this month in Charlottesville, Va., about monuments.

“Making what happened in Charlottesville about monuments is distracting … and divisive,” McCaskill said Wednesday, according to CNN.

“What Charlottesville should really be about is unifying this country against hatred and bigotry.”

{mosads}McCaskill expressed hope President Trump would “focus more about the unification piece of this than picking things that would continue to divide us.”

“Never in my life did I think I would see hundreds of people from around the country marching under swastika flags,” she said.

“I didn’t believe I’d see that proudly, without masks, defiantly — that’s a moment that can unite this country, and unfortunately I think the President missed that opportunity.”

Her comments come after Trump faced bipartisan backlash last week for his comments after the violent clashes in Virginia.

During a press conference last week, Trump said there is “blame on both sides” for the deadly violence in Virginia, where one person died and more were injured when a car was driven into a group of counterprotesters.

Trump on Tuesday defended his response to the violence in Charlottesville during a rally in Phoenix.
