Hawaii’s Sen. Brian Schatz (D) called on the public to heed Sen. Bob Corker’s (R-Tenn.) comment that President Trump could lead the U.S. toward ‘World War III,’ as tensions rise between Washington and North Korea.
“There’s a tendency to wonder about the politics of Corker’s interview. Ignore that, and listen to his warnings about an accidental war,” Schatz tweeted on Sunday night.

He went on to outline why the public should be concerned about the possibility of a conflict with North Korea, as Trump continues to direct his increasingly antagonistic rhetoric at Pyongyang.
“War on Korean Peninsula could shut down trade to and from Asia for months or years,” Schatz tweeted.
“War on the Korean Peninsula would cause millions of lives to be lost,” he added.
“There are nearly 200,000 Americans living in South Korea and Japan.”
Schatz’s tweets came after the Democratic senator retweeted a New York Times article from Sunday night, in which Corker, who has become embroiled in an online spat with President Trump, said Trump’s threats toward other countries could put the country “on the path to World War III.”
On Saturday, Trump continued his harsh rhetoric against Pyongyang, insisting that a diplomatic approach over the past 25 years “hasn’t worked” and that the North Korean regime has made “fools of U.S. negotiators.”
“Sorry, but only one thing will work!” Trump said in his tweet.
Schatz has criticized Trump’s hardline approach toward North Korea in the past. In August, he tweeted that Trump’s rhetoric was “unwise” and warned that “bad decisions can make a terrible situation worse.”
