Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass) blasted President Trump on Tuesday, accusing him of trying to “bully, intimidate and slut-shame” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.)
“Are you really trying to bully, intimidate and slut-shame Sen. Gillibrand?” Warren tweeted. “Do you know who you’re picking a fight with? Good luck with that. … Nevertheless, #shepersisted.”
Trump tweeted Tuesday morning that Gillibrand was a “lightweight lawmaker” who would “do anything” for campaign contributions. The barb came after Gillibrand called for Trump’s resignation over the sexual harassment and assault allegations against him.
Trump’s tweet drew quick and pointed backlash from lawmakers and members of the media.
{mosads}Warren’s hashtag, #shepersisted, is a reference to a comment made by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) after Warren was removed from the Senate floor after she spoke in opposition of Attorney General Jeff Session’s nomination. “She persisted” and “we persist” have since been used as a rallying cry for feminists and activists opposing Trump’s presidency and GOP policies.
Gillibrand also responded to Trump’s tweet Tuesday morning, writing “you cannot silence me or the millions of women” who have spoken out against him.
