Sen. Harris: I look forward to the day we need a nursery off the side of the cloakroom

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) says she’s looking forward to the day when a nursery will need to be installed off the Senate cloakroom.

“I look forward to the day that we need a nursery off the side of the cloakroom in the United States Senate,” Harris said on CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Thursday.

Harris’s comments came a day after the Senate voted with unanimous consent to allow senators to bring children under the age of 1 onto the floor of the chamber.

That rule change followed the birth of Sen. Tammy Duckworth’s (D-Ill.) daughter earlier this month. Duckworth is the first senator to give birth while in office.

Harris also touted that the number of women currently serving in the Senate – 23 – has reached a record high. Colbert suggested that that number could go up after the November midterm elections.

“I’m looking forward to that,” Harris said.
