GOP senator hesitant to call for Missouri governor’s resignation

Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) during an interview on Sunday was hesitant to call for Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R) to resign.

“I don’t think it’s my job to decide whether he should resign yet or not,” Blunt said on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” referring to the governor, who has faced intense pressure to resign in the wake of sexual assault allegations.

Blunt said that he is concerned about the allegations, but he has confidence that the issue could be solved legally or legislatively.

“Voters voted for him. There are two ways to deal with this issue. One is the legal process going on, the other is the legislative process. There is no reason not to have confidence in both of those,” Blunt added.

A Missouri House of Representatives report detailed allegations of sexual harassment against Greitens. The controversy has led several politicians, including Republicans, to call for Greitens to step down.   

“Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd said on Sunday that Blunt seemed hesitant to call for Greitens to resign, prompting Blunt to say that “when you reach conclusions without allowing people to be fully heard, that’s not a good thing.”

“The governor ran on the basis that he had a lot to say bad about everybody in politics but he did get elected and there is a way to deal with these issues that is more appropriate than a bunch of politicians saying what ought to happen,” Blunt said.
