Arizona highway signs honor McCain

Some highway signs in Arizona on Wednesday shared a message honoring the state’s late Sen. John McCain (R).

Rep. Tom O’Halleran (D-Ariz.) shared a photo on Twitter of a sign reading “Country First. Rest in Peace Senator McCain.”

“Today we mourn the loss of a true hero,” O’Halleran wrote.

McCain, who died Saturday at the age of 81 a little more than a year after being diagnosed with brain cancer, was widely respected across party lines and lauded as a maverick who put “country before party.”

Funeral services will take place in Arizona on Thursday, where former Vice President Joe Biden, a close friend of McCain’s, will speak.

McCain’s body will then be moved to the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, where he will lie in state on Friday before receiving a full dress funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., the following day. Former presidents Obama and George W. Bush will eulogize him at the Saturday service.

McCain will be buried in private at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., on Sunday, next to a close friend.

President Trump, who had a contentious relationship with McCain that continued into the senator’s final weeks, will not attend the funeral.
