Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) said Thursday that her husband has been released from the hospital after severe respiratory symptoms and testing positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
The former presidential candidate said her husband John Bessler had received treatment for pneumonia and low oxygen after his positive test.
“He took a good turn, was just released and is now recovering at home,” she said in a statement. “Thanks to those who cared for him and for all front line health care workers.”
The Minnesota senator posted on Medium earlier this week that her family received Bessler’s positive test results Monday. At the time, Klobuchar said she had not been in the same location as her husband for two weeks prior to his positive test, and she was outside the 14-day period for getting sick.
Klobuchar, after advice from her doctor, decided not to get tested due to the shortages across the nation.
The U.S. has recorded the third-most confirmed cases of the disease of any country, with almost 80,000 as of Thursday afternoon and 619 recoveries. The death toll in the U.S. has surpassed 1,100, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
The Senate unanimously passed a stimulus bill Wednesday to offer monetary relief to workers, industry and medical professionals as lawmakers continue to scramble to curb the fallout of the pandemic.
