Sen. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.) said on Wednesday that she will temporarily suspend campaign fundraising and donate her April payback in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
McSally’s Senate campaign will instead use the 15-day period to raise money for the Salvation Army of Arizona, where she and her staff will also volunteer, according to a statement from her campaign.
“My campaign will pause all fundraising for the next 15 days, as I launch a 15 days of giving campaign. We will use all parts of my campaign and my team to raise as much money as possible to help people who are hurting because of the coronavirus,” McSally said in a YouTube video.
“I’ll also be donating my Senate salary for the month of April to help people in need,” the GOP senator added.
She announced last month that she would suspend TV political ads for at least 30 days and suspend door-to-door canvassing.
McSally, who was appointed to her seat in 2019 and is running to complete the remainder of the late Sen. John McCain’s (R) term, is facing a stiff challenge from former astronaut and gun control activist Mark Kelly, who also suspended canvassing and larger events last month.
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report ranks the race as a “toss up.”
