Hirono tells Ted Cruz to stop ‘mansplaining’

A Senate Judiciary Committee hearing turned contentious on Wednesday with Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) telling Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to stop “mansplaining” amid an argument about originalism in judicial rulings.

“I would ask that Sen. Cruz not mistake what I’m saying and, you know what, all this mansplaining — please stop,” Hirono said.

Cruz had been questioning District Court Judge Gustavo Gelpí, whom President Biden has nominated to sit on the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals, and objected when his inquiries were cut short at the end of his allotted five minutes.

Cruz responded to Hirono’s statement by asking the Hawaii senator to explain what he had mischaracterized and received no answer.
