Dem governor: Republicans ‘have been lackeys’ to Trump’s ‘moral depravity’

Washington state’s Democratic governor lashed out at his Republican colleagues across the nation on Tuesday, saying in a new interview that GOP governors are “lackeys” enabling President Trump’s “moral depravity” in the White House.

In an interview with Politico Magazine’s Off Message podcast, Gov. Jay Inslee called the silence from some GOP governors on some of the president’s more controversial agenda items “shocking and disappointing.”

“We have Republican governors who are kowtowing to Donald Trump and will continue to do so, who have been lackeys to his abysmal record and his moral depravity and his inhumane policies,” Inslee said.

“It’s been amazing to me, shocking and disappointing, that we have so many Republicans who now aspire for governor who just are afraid and shaking in their boots and won’t stand up against this man in the White House,” he added.

Inslee, who chairs the Democratic Governors’ Association, vowed that Republicans would face consequences for enabling the president’s agenda in November at the election booth.

“[A]ll across the country they will be called to account for that chaotic behavior,” he said.

“It comes down to Democratic governors who are standing up for action and the Republicans who are standing in the courthouse door just taking orders from the NRA,” Inslee added.

Republicans currently hold a 2-1 advantage in governors’ mansions around the country, with 33 states represented by GOP governors compared to just 16 Democrats.

The GOP also holds both Houses of Congress heading into November midterms. A recent poll, however, showed that Democrats could hold as much as a 15-point advantage on a generic House ballot for 2018.
