Abbott to unveil plan to address school shootings

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is expected to release proposals on Wednesday aimed at reducing gun violence in schools, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

Abbott’s proposals will come nearly two weeks after a shooting at a Santa Fe, Texas, high school left 10 people dead and 13 injured.

The governor has not provided any details about his proposals, but his office told the Houston Chronicle that the plans will come in the form of ideas that can be implemented immediately and legislation lawmakers can consider when the Texas Legislature reconvenes.

Abbott’s proposals come after three days of roundtable discussions led by Abbott at the state Capitol last week. The discussions included survivors, educators, law enforcement officers, politicians and security experts, according to the Statesman.

The more popular ideas from the discussions included hiring more school counselors and having more armed security on campuses, the Chronicle reported. Texas currently averages 430 students per counselor, according to the Chronicle.

Abbot will reveal his proposals at an event in Dallas on Wednesday morning and again in San Marcos in the afternoon.
