California wildfire contained after two weeks
The northern California wildfire that killed at least 85 people and left hundreds unaccounted for has been fully contained, authorities announced Sunday.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said Sunday that firefighters have been able to fully surround the Camp Fire, the Associated Press reported.
The fire, which is one of multiple wildfires burning in California, was the deadliest on record in the state’s history, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Officials also said Saturday that 249 people are missing, down from 475 who were unaccounted for as of Saturday.
The fire has also destroyed almost 14,000 homes, the Times reported.
“We didn’t get mudslides, so that was good,” said Brigitte Foster, the spokeswoman for fire officials in the Camp fire, per the Times. “We got enough to hamper down on the fire.”
“We still have plenty of resources out there to work from the containment line and make sure there are no smoldering spots along the edge,” Foster added. “We still have search and rescue teams working in the area.”
