Burgum won’t seek another term as North Dakota governor after failed presidential bid

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R) said Monday he will not seek reelection and will depart from his post at the end of his second term on Dec. 14.

“Serving as governor and first lady of the great state of North Dakota has been one of the most incredible and rewarding experiences of our lives. Kathryn and I are eternally grateful to the citizens of North Dakota for twice giving us this opportunity to serve the state we love so much,” Burgum said in a statement.

Burgum’s announcement comes after a failed presidential bid catapulted his name into the national spotlight. Recently, he endorsed former President Trump in his efforts to return to the White House and joined the former president on the campaign trail.

Burgum, 67, did not say in his statement what his next steps would be professionally or whether he would retire from public life.

The statement touted his accomplishments in the state, including on infrastructure investments, support for the agriculture and energy industries, and efforts to combat stigma around seeking treatment for addiction.

“There’s never been a better time to live, work and raise a family in North Dakota. Our state is extremely well-positioned for the future thanks to the efforts of everyone on Team ND to empower people, improve lives and inspire success,” Burgum said in his statement.
