LGBTQ Pride flag flies over New York state capitol for first time: report

Just under a week into Pride Month, the LGBTQ rainbow flag was reportedly raised over New York’s state capitol for the first time ever.

Along with the raising of the flag, the statehouse opened an “Equality Will Never Be Silent” exhibit in honor of Pride Month, which will stay open for the summer, CNN reported Thursday.{mosads}

“New York is home to trailblazing leaders in the LGBTQ rights movement who broke down barriers and never stopped fighting for full equality,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said in a statement to CNN. “This exhibit celebrates and honors these extraordinarily brave and talented people — and New York will always be grateful to them.”

Other cities across the nation have raised the rainbow flag for Pride Month, which goes through the end of June. The celebration takes place this month to honor the Stonewall uprising, which led to a series of protests that marked a turning point in the U.S. LGBTQ rights movement.
