An Indianapolis high school counselor filed a lawsuit against the Catholic high school where she worked for 15 years.
Shelly Fitzgerald filed her lawsuit against the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and Roncali High School on Monday, seeking damages that include lost wages and emotional distress, the Associated Press reports.
In her lawsuit, Fitzgerald claims that she was discriminated against because of her sexual orientation. Fitzgerald has been married to her wife, Victoria, since 2014.
Last year, she was placed on administrative leave because of her same-sex marriage and eventually fired, according to the news source.
In a statement, the archdiocese noted that the U.S. Supreme Court “has repeatedly recognized that religious schools have a constitutional right to hire leaders who support the schools’ religious mission.”
