Gillum apologizes after being found ‘inebriated’ in hotel room

Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum (D) apologized Friday after he was found intoxicated in a Miami Beach hotel room with a man who had suffered “a possible drug overdose.”

According to the police report, officers were unable to talk to Gillum “due to his inebriated state.” Inside the room, authorities found “clear plastic baggies containing suspected crystal meth.”

In a statement, Gillum said, “I was in Miami last night for a wedding celebration when first responders were called to assist one of my friends.”

“While I had too much to drink, I want to be clear that I have never used methamphetamines,” the 40-year-old added. “I apologize to the people of Florida for the distraction this has caused our movement.”

The former mayor of Tallahassee also said that he planned on spending the following weeks with his family.

In 2018, Gillum came within 34,000 votes of becoming Florida’s governor, losing to now-Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).
