South Carolina closes nonessential businesses

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) on Tuesday ordered all nonessential businesses to close in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The closures, including theaters, salons and concert venues, will go into effect starting Wednesday, McMaster announced at a briefing.

The update comes one day after McMaster announced he would be closing all public access to beaches and waterways.

The majority of states across the country have shut down nonessential businesses in response to the coronavirus pandemic, but a handful of governors have thus far declined to follow suit.

South Carolina’s health department reported an additional 158 COVID-19 cases and four additional deaths Tuesday, bringing the statewide total to 1,083 cases and 22 deaths.
