Nation’s largest mall to reopen June 1
The largest mall in the United States, Mall of America, won’t reopen its doors until June 1 despite Minnesota’s expiring stay-at-home order this month, according to the Star Tribune,
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) announced on Wednesday that the state’s stay-at-home order would expire this coming Monday, May 18, allowing nonessential retail stores and malls to reopen then amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The mall said on Thursday that it wanted to give its over 175 retailers time to prepare for customers and ensure their safety during uncertain times.
“Mall of America has made the decision to reopen retail stores effective June 1,” the mall said in a statement.
“This will allow us to continue creating the safest environment possible for our team members, tenants and guests. It will also allow our diverse set of retail tenants the time needed to rehire, train staff and prepare their individual stores with necessary cleaning, sanitization and safety measure implementations.”
It added: “All dining and attractions will remain closed until further guidance from state officials is provided. Food establishments may still operate through curbside and delivery.”
Walz’s plan requires retailers that choose to open to have a ” COVID-19 Preparedness Plan” and will only be operate at half of their normal operating capacity.
Walz also said on Wednesday that he’s working on guidance for bars, restaurants and salons so that they can reopen on June 1.
