Miami-Dade County will allow gyms to remain open, Mayor Carlos Gimenez (R) announced Tuesday, reversing his order from the day before closing fitness centers.
“I had a very productive virtual meeting just now with our medical experts and the County’s Wellness Group. We arrived at a compromise to keep gyms & fitness studios open,” Gimenez tweeted.
Gimenez signed an emergency order Monday that closed gyms along with restaurants and bars. He did not shut down the county’s beaches as part of the order, but vowed to close them again if beachgoers failed to follow anti-crowding rules.
The closure was in response to a spike in cases in Florida, which hit a single-day record of 11,458 new coronavirus cases on Saturday.
Florida has reported a total of more than 210,00 coronavirus cases, according to state data.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said last week he will not reimpose statewide restrictions or closures as the number of coronavirus cases increases.
