Protesters in Portland target mayor’s house, police union building

Protesters in Portland, Ore., demonstrated in front of the city’s police union building and Mayor Ted Wheeler’s (D) condo Friday in another night of protests, the Oregonian reported.

The demonstrators called for Wheeler’s resignation amid what they consider a failure to adequately address police violence in the city. One resident of the building and friend of the mayor, David Kahn, told the newspaper that Wheeler was not home during the demonstrations.

“I’m certain that if he was here tonight we probably could have arranged for something, but he’s not,” said Kahn.

Protests also took place at the Portland Police Association building in another part of the city. The demonstrations were largely peaceful, the Oregonian reported, with some demonstrators spray painting messages on the boards used to close up the building.

At one point, one person set a mattress and other debris on fire and laid it against the door of the Portland Police Association building, police said in a statement. At least one dumpster had also been set on fire in the street nearby.

Police claim that when they attempted to move demonstrators away from the building and extinguish the fire, objects including rocks were thrown at them.

The fire was put out and a bottle containing flammable fluid was found near the scene, police said.

Police arrested “multiple people” but it’s unclear exactly how many or on what charges.

Protests have continued in Portland for over 90 days since the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died in Minneapolis police custody on May 25.
