South Carolina lieutenant governor tests positive for COVID-19

South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette (R) said Monday she has tested positive for the coronavirus and is quarantining at home with mild symptoms. 

Evette said she “began feeling unwell” Thursday morning and “immediately began to self-quarantine.” She was tested Friday and got her positive results back Saturday.

“I’m fortunate to have had only mild symptoms and I’m already feeling much better,” she said in a series of tweets, encouraging others to get tested. “David has taken GREAT care of me! As careful as I’ve been, this really does show how easily the virus is spread.”

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) called Evette’s positive COVID-19 test a “stark reminder” that the virus “can impact any of us” and urged the public to “remain vigilant.”

Evette’s husband and youngest child are at home with her but have not shown symptoms or gotten tested, McMaster spokesperson Brian Symmes said, according to The Post and Courier. 

Two of Evette’s staff members as well as her protective detail are also quarantining at home, according to the newspaper. 

South Carolina has reported more than 130,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and 2,922 confirmed deaths, as of Monday.
