New Jersey governor urges Trump campaign event attendees to get tested for COVID-19

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) urged those who attended a Trump campaign event in his state this week to get tested for COVID-19 after the president announced Friday that he and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for the virus.

Their diagnosis came hours after they held a campaign roundtable in New Jersey. 

“The contact-tracing process is underway. We urge everyone who attended yesterday’s event in Bedminster to take full precautions, including self-quarantining and getting tested,” Murphy said in a statement.

The president and first lady said on Twitter that they were feeling well, though some outlets have reported that Trump was beginning to experience symptoms, after White House adviser Hope Hicks tested positive for the virus earlier this week. 

“Tammy and I send our best wishes to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a speedy and complete return to good health,” Murphy said, referring to his wife, Tammy Murphy. “If there is one thing we have learned in New Jersey over these months, it’s that we pull together and support everyone fighting this virus.”

Trump indicated that he would be quarantined, but it’s unclear when he’ll be able to resume in-person events. His diagnosis comes a month away from the presidential election.
