Jose Andres made meals for National Guard, police after Capitol riot

Washington, D.C., chef José Andrés cooked for first responders through the night after pro-Trump rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

Andrés and the staff of his World Central Kitchen cooked into the early hours of Thursday morning, he said on Twitter.

Andrés tweeted that he had picked up 120 pizzas in Bethesda, Md., to distribute. He added that once it became clear that the pizzas would not be enough, he and the staff cooked stew and prepared fried egg sandwiches and fruit for police officers and members of the National Guard.

I don’t know what else to do right now…so we @WCKitchen just started cooking. Pizzas weren’t enough for everyone…many have been working over 30 hours nonstop. “I know it’s a lot of controversies and everything, but we feed people. We feed anybody and everybody,” Andrés said in a video he tweeted early Thursday. “Today, police [are] maintaining my beautiful Washington D.C., safe.”

Rioters breached the Capitol Wednesday afternoon, disrupting the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory and forcing a lockdown. At least one woman was shot and killed during the unrest. The building was secured by Wednesday evening and Congress eventually certified Biden’s victory.
