Chauvin taken into custody, bail revoked after jury finds him guilty of all charges in trial

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on Tuesday was placed into police custody and had his bail revoked just moments after being found guilty on all charges brought against him in the death of George Floyd.

Less than a day after the jury began deliberations in the trial following closing arguments from the prosecution and defense, jurors reached a verdict Tuesday afternoon finding the former officer guilty of second-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder.

Shortly after Judge Peter Cahill read the verdict, Chauvin was handcuffed and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office took the former officer into custody.

The prosecution also requested to have Chauvin’s bail revoked, a motion that was granted by Cahill as the former officer awaits sentencing in the coming weeks.

Later, Cahill thanked jurors for their service in the weeks-long trial.

“I have to thank you on behalf of the people of the state of Minnesota, for not only jury service, but heavy-duty jury service,” he said.

Once the verdict was announced, people were seen cheering and celebrating outside the courtroom. A number of civil rights groups have also reacted to the news, saying the decision amounted to justice in the trial.

The long-awaited verdict comes after the nation saw months of continued protests against police brutality and racial inequality following Floyd’s killing last summer.
