15-year-old charged in shooting at North Carolina high school

Police have charged a 15-year-old student with attempted murder for allegedly shooting his classmate Monday inside a high school in Wilmington, N.C., NBC affiliate WECT reported.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office announced in a tweet that officers arrested Chance Deablo following the fight at about 11 a.m. at New Hanover High School.

The student Deablo shot was taken to a nearby medical facility to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon said at a news briefing.

“I’m sure it is life-changing, but it’s non-life-threatening, from the information I have,” McMahon said. 

New Hanover County Schools said in a statement that the high school’s students and staff have been moved into a nearby middle school to shelter in place.

“The Sheriff’s office has confirmed this is NOT an active shooter situation,” the statement said. 

School officials added that Williston Middle School and nearby Gregory Elementary and Laney High are also currently under shelter-in-place protocols, WECT reported. 

Deablo is facing multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder, possession of a weapon on school grounds and discharging a weapon on school grounds.

A video circulated Monday on social media showing a fight taking place in a school hallway, with three gunshots audible at the end of the video. WECT said the video “appeared” to be taken at North Hanover High but added that its authenticity had not been officially confirmed.
