A group of Republican governors is traveling to the Texas border this week in order to announce a new security initiative.
The Republican governors will attend a news conference in Mission, Texas, with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Wednesday in order to unveil a 10-point security plan for the border, The Associated Press reported.
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) reportedly began travel on Tuesday in order to make the event. His spokesperson C.J. Karamargin confirmed to the AP that he will be in attendance along with seven other GOP governors.
Republicans have lashed out at the White House and President Biden on the issue of immigration in recent months, citing a record number of migrants entering the country this year. The president has also faced criticism from Democrats for his immigration policies, as progressives have blasted the administration for not moving on from some moves implemented under President Trump.
Ducey and 25 other Republicans sent a letter to Biden last month, calling for a meeting to discuss his immigration policies.
“The months-long surge in illegal crossings has instigated an international humanitarian crisis, spurred a spike in international criminal activity, and opened the floodgates to human traffickers and drug smugglers endangering public health and safety in our states,” the governors wrote at the time.
Ducey’s office told AP that the president has not yet responded.
